Coral Gables Facility Monitoring
The City (not-so) Beautiful
Ongoing Monitoring
History of City of Coral
Gables Maintenance Facility agreement with WNA:
Many of you know that in 1999 the City of Coral Gables
decided to move their Automotive Repair Public Works Facility to our back yards
at 2800 SW 72 Ave. That move was motivated by the City to make way for “Village
of Merrick Park” shopping center. In their haste to build the Mall and the
Facility, they overlooked that they were building the Facility to close to our
neighborhood and violated several zoning ordinances.
In 1999 many of you were present at the hearing and the
Council members agreed that this was not a good thing for our Neighborhood.
They
voted against the City.
The City appealed the decision to the County Manager.
The Manager told the City they needed to work something out with the Neighbors
before they would get their approval. Your Waterway Neighborhood Association (a
Florida not-for profit organization) organized and negotiated a settlement with
the City of Coral Gables. The City legally agreed to many issues that were of
concern to us. In that Agreement they agreed to demolish the Incinerator
Facility within 3 years (it took 6 years, finally demolished in January of
2006). They promise to keep to a very restrictive site plan , and finally they
agreed to restrict the hours they would operate the Facility.
