About Us:

The WNA: who we are
The Waterway Neighborhood Association was created in order to  address the needs and concerns of it's residents. The association is made up of volunteer neighbors that donate their time and money to the cause of improving our little corner of the world. Membership and participation are not mandatory, we do this because we want to.

The WNA's boundaries stretch from Coral Way to Bird Road, and from the Palmetto to SW 67th Avenue.

History
The Waterway Neighborhood Association has grass root beginnings from its 1973 humble inception. The neighbors united against the Westchester Hospital. The hospital wanted to close the 75th Avenue entrance to our neighborhood so they may build more buildings. To create another opening into our area they had planned to open up the 74th Avenue. and South Waterway Dr. open lot (which is now owned by each neighbor living next to it).

In 1992 Hurricane Andrew impacted our neighborhood when the county decided to burn trees and brush, using the then existing smoke stack. Our neighbors went out to protest and stop the burning which was littering ashes on our cars. Petitions were circulated and the burning stopped.

In 1999 the challenge that finally united our neighborhood and also incorporated us was the erection of the Coral Gables Maintenance Facility.

In July 1999 we had a very involved neighbor, Henry Hammond, he was the first one to be alerted to the situation at the newly converted site on 72nd Ave., The future Coral Gables Maintenance Facility. He involved the Miami Herald Neighbors section and asked everyone in the area to unite. We did.

This property, owned by Coral Gables had first housed a lake which was later filled with ashes from the burning stack on the property. It was a vacant lot. When Coral Gables decided to sell their lot on LeJeune Road across from Coral Gables High School to the company that built Merrick Park, they relocated their new facility to its new location on 72nd Avenue.

There was one problem, they had to obtain a variance because their auto repair facility was set back 250 ft. from the canal and the back yards of several homes on S. Waterway Drive. This was not to code so they had to go before Community Council #10 to obtain this variance.

We quickly incorporated and our new president, Tony Lopez, set into action and hired an attorney to draft a contract to co-exist harmoniously with this new facility. Concessions were made by both parties and our Associations still monitors that situation closely.

Our new president, Arnaldo Mosquera, is a longtime resident. He was an original protester in 1973 and is active in Crime Watch and communicates regularly with Commission Sosa to improve our neighborhood.

We look forward to bettering our community and welcome new members who wish to be active and involved in our organization.

The WNA: who we're not
We are not a homeowners association. We do not collect dues or association fees. We are not a management company. We do not impose special assessments. We are simply a group of neighbors who care about the wellbeing of the community and do something about it.

WNA Benefits:

  • We have our own designated POLICE OFFICER assigned to the WNA area.

(If you see anything suspicious in our area please call 311 or (305) 4-POLICE to have our officer dispatched).

  • Board members attend ZONING HEARINGS that concern our Neighborhood on behalf of its residents.
  • WNA representatives attend CRIME WATCH meetings held every 3rd Wednesday of the month at A.D. Barnes Park at 7:00PM.

(We ENCOURAGE all neighbors to attend all Crime Watch meetings).

  • WNA Improvements to our neighborhood include: eliminating plans to bridge new roads into our neighborhood from Coral Way on 74th Avenue, resulting in less drive through traffic in our area. Traffic light timing to reduce back up traffic, and landscape improvements.
  • The WNA has worked closely with COMMISSIONER SOSA’s office regarding: locations of traffic circles to help reduce speeding and to beautify the area; eliminating illegal dumping; and sidewalk repairs.
  • WNA worked on resolution to the poorly planned intersection, traffic flow, and illegal parking in front of the Hospital on Coral Way and 75th Avenue. Now the road has curbs cars can't double park on the sidewalk and it is much safer for student & patients & hospital employee pedestrians.
